intro
Philamonjaro photographs LA punk legends Bad Religion at at Republicca in Valencia, Spain.
Currently on their 40 years + 2 Tour, Bad Religion are travelling across Europe and the UK this spring before continuing back to the US. The plus two part of the tour name accounts for the pause due to COVID. Judging from their concert at Republicca in Valencia, Spain, no momentum was lost during these two years. In fact, early on during COVID lockdown they published their memoir 'Do What You Want - The Story of Bad Religion' with author Jim Ruland. If anything, the pent up energy from lockdown only added to the show. The house was packed and the audience oscillated with the high voltage music. Greg Graffin (vocals), Jay Bentley (bass), Brian Baker (guitar), Mike Dimkich (guitar) and Jamie Miller (drums) collectively deliver a thunderous sound with machine-gun precision. Bad Religion have become nothing less than phenomenal as they earned it in their four-plus decade run. Beginning from the early ‘80’s Los Angeles punk scene along with Social Distortion, Agent Orange, T.S.O.L. The Offspring and The Minutemen, Bad Religion have continuously toured and recorded. It is an impressive discography of seventeen studio releases selling over five million copies according to the web site Ultimate Pop Culture. All this while founding member and lead singer Graffin holds a PHD in Zoology from Cornell University. This puts him in the rarefied air of rock music academics who are experts in fields outside of music. He is in the company of Brian May (PHD in Astrophysics from Imperial College London), Tom Morello (BA in Social Studies from Harvard) and Jeff “Skunk” Baxter (top security clearance with the U.S. Department of Defence). Beyond all the success and longevity, it was what Graffin stated to the audience that said it all. When he humbly greeted the audience he confessed, “It is because of you, we are here.” Set List: Generator Recipe for Hate New Dark Ages Man With a Mission Punk Rock Song Los Angeles Is Burning Struck a Nerve Suffer Come Join Us End of History Fuck You We're Only Gonna Die Dept. of False Hope Do What You Want Modern Man Slumber Anesthesia No Control Atomic Garden You Infected Sorrow I Want to Conquer the World 21st Century (Digital Boy) Encore: American Jesus Fuck Armageddon...
