intro
Excellent only radio session on 10” vinyl from short-lived 1980’s garage punks The Vultures
The Vultures were part of the reverberant Edinburgh indie scene in the late 1980s but these garage punks had a brief stay and were gone almost before they had arrived. In that fast and furious short space of time they released just one 12-inch single on the famed Narodnik label, ‘Good Thing’, an EP that was incidentally the final release on that classic label. As you can imagine, from that brief period there is not a lot of material available, so it is brilliant that The Vultures recorded the one session they did with Liz Kersha, who was then doing Radio 1’s early-evening show, in June 1988. In good old music style, not one track reaches the two-minute limit, and only the song ‘Good Thing’ has been previously released in any format. So, why release an EP of a short-lived, nearly forty-year old band which hardly did anything I hear you ask? Well, this bunc’h at the time were tipped for a lot more than they actually did and were championed by such big names as Kershaw. This is also a document of a much-loved era and The Vultures recordings sound as fresh today as they did in the late 80’s. The EP has ‘Good Thing’, ‘Something New’, ‘I'll Kill That Girl’ - which sounds very much like early Joy Division – and finishes with ‘I Go Ape’, a cover of he Dickies’ You Drive Me Ape (You Big Gorilla). And that’s not all – vinyl buyers will also receive an array of images and sleeve notes from Janie Nicoll.
