Tossing Seed are an indie pop band, who originate from the small town of Magelang in Indonesia. They released a six song-mini album, ‘When You Come Around’, in 2022 on red 12” inch vinyl on Chinese label Small Animal Records. Their latest release, ‘Stars in Your Eyes’, has just come out on 7” vinyl on Precious Recordings of London. Pennyblackmusic spoke to rhythm guitarist Adit about the new single and the indie pop scene in Indonesia. PB: How did Tossing Seed first form and get together? A: We were a group of friends who shared the same vision about the music we wanted to create. So, Tossing Seed was born. Each member of Tossing Seed has their own project or band as well: Bagas (lead guitar) in Hound https://goneblindrecords.bandcamp.com/album/forced-to-live; Adit (rhythm gtuitar) in MUTE https://vanillathunderrecords.bandcamp.com/album/pure-hatred; Ginanjar & Kinjek (frums and percussion) in Loca Polka https://locapolka.bandcamp.com/; Elvan (bass) in Milhouse https://m2dh.bandcamp.com/track/sick-of-everything; And Esse on vocals, who is our good friend. The music we play in Tossing Seed is very different from what we’ve recorded in our previous projects. We grew up in the hardcore/punk scene. The British power-pop band The Hazmats was a huge influence on our work. The members of that band also played in hardcore/punk projects. Tossing Seed are probably their biggest fans. PB: Where does the name Tossing Seed come from and what does it imply to you? A. We took the name ‘Tossing Seed’ from the singles compilation ‘Tossing Seeds’ by Superchunk (We really like their music, by the way). Since we don’t take stage names too seriously, we agreed to use it for every performance. The name doesn’t have a serious meaning, as we come from a small town in our country, and we hope to find new seeds in our city to carry on our spirit when we finally land. PB: Is there a big pop indie pop scene in Indonesiia and where do Tossing Seed fit into it? A: We think Indonesia has the potential to produce many spectacular indie-pop bands. For example, The Sensitive, The Crayon Cats, The Caroline’s and many more. Furthermore, Indonesia also has may DIY record labels that are a home for indie-pop bands. All of this encourages synergy between bands, record labels, and collective spaces. We also open the way for fellow indie-pop bands who want to tour and stop by our town. PB: The A-side ‘Stars in Your Eyes on your new single is like a Pains of Being Pure at Heart number sung by a female vocalist, and the B-side ‘Bootleg Charm’ falls somewhere between The Soup Dragons and Buzzcocks. What do you see as your main musical influences? A: Yes, that’s right. All of those mentioned served as our guide in combining various sounds into one. The Primitives were also a big influence. Their sound is truly melodic and pleasing to the ear. The Soup Dragons’ rock ‘n’ roll also inspired us in our work. It feels even stronger when the indie-pop sound is combined with rock ‘n’ roll melodies. PB: How did you become involved with Precious Recordings of London? A: We sent a demo of our latest song, ‘Stars In Your Eyes/ Bootleg Charm’, to Precious Recordings of London earlier this year. Unexpectedly it was probably the best day ever for Tossing Seed. We received a positive response and were offered a vinyl release. Without hesitation, with warm smiles, we accepted. Since then, we’ve been in constant communication, and our relationship with Nick Godfrey has only grown stronger. We’re so lucky to know him. We love Precious Recordings of London. PB: What comes next for you? You have already released the six-song mini-album, ‘When You Come Around’. Is the next step a full album? A: That’s right. We’ve been busy going in and out of the studio every week, cooking up new songs for our upcoming debut album. There are ten songs on it, so please pray for it to be finished soon. Thank you. PB: Thank you,
