intro
Immaculate-sounding yet melancholic latest solo album from Throwing Muses’ frontwoman Kristin Hersh
I've only very recently started listening to Kristin Hersh following a gig at The Trades Club in Hebden Bridge. I don't recall listening to Throwing Muses back in the day, for whatever reason they weren't on my radar. ‘Clear Pond Road’, her latest album, is a thoughtful, personal journey. The recording is crystal clear, each string plucked is pronounced and deliberate, as are the vocals. Some songs are a howl into the winds of the past whilst others are more delicately constructed. I can't help feeling a sense of melancholy and loss listening to this album. Perhaps listening to it in the depths of winter has that effect. The clarity of the sound suits the bare branches of the trees and reflects the clear skies and cold air. It's not a cold album though. There is plenty of feeling in here, life’s experiences being reflected upon and laid before us. I think my standout track is ‘Dandelion’. Musically and lyrically it's a very wistful song, conjuring up feelings of sadness and loneliness even for someone who isn't particularly sad or lonely!
