Miles Kane always has a good time on stage. The thing I admire most about the Wirral frontman is his sense of professional duty to entertain and still after all these years he seems to love it just the same. People have paid to come out to see him and he’s not going to disappoint. A small venue like the O2 is a double-edged sword because what it gains in intimacy, it lacks in general atmosphere or maybe this is the combination of a Monday night and a slightly older audience. ‘Troubled Son’, ‘Better Than That ‘and ‘Best Is Yet To Come’ open the set strong but already you can tell this is definitely going to be a different Miles Kane gig than a few days previously. There is more subdued atmosphere but Miles take it in his stride. There’s a lull in the set around the middle with ‘One Man Band’, ‘Heal’ and ‘Loaded’ and again it’s hard to tell if it is because these are newer songs or the atmosphere. ‘Inhaler’, ‘First of my Kind’, ‘Baggio’, which is my personal favourite off his new album ‘One Man Band’, and all-timer ‘Rearrange’ go down great and the crowd livens up. Annoyingly for the people at the back by the merch stand one of the latter songs is completely tarnished by a staff room door’s alarm going off. It is quiet enough to only get the attention of around fifteen people but poor form by the staff at Oxford O2. ‘Come Closer’ and - I’m sure another track on the future ‘Greatest Hits’ - ‘Don’t Forget You Are compete for best song of the night before Kane takes his exit. Like the seasoned entertainer Kane is, he knows exactly how to put on a show under specific circumstances. A thoroughly enjoyable night with a classy finish and I look forward to seeing him let loose more in the future hopefully with a fellow Shadow Puppet. Set List: Troubled Son Better Than That Best Is Yet To Come Silver Screen One Man Band Inhaler Heal Loaded First of My Kind Baggio Rearrange The Wonder Colour of the Trap Cry On My Guitar Coupe De Grace Never Taken Me Alive Come Closer Encore: Don’t Forget Who You Are Photographs by Marie Hazelwood
