intro
Nick Dent-Robinson profiles the career of singer-songwriter and actress Charlie Dore, who is currently playing a small venue tour of the United Kingdom.
Having started with a concert at Oxford's Quaker Meeting House on Saturday 18th May, Charlie Dore has embarked on another limited tour of smaller UK venues. Best known these days as a respected songwriter for others, Charlie's multi-faceted career has included acting, comedy-improvisation, writing for radio, film and TV plus several decades of performing live music with her very professional band. After drama school Charlie and her school friend Julian Litman formed a bluegrass band playing Monday nights in a West London pancake house. She was signed by Island records in 1978, made her debut album in Nashville and soon released her first hit single, ‘Pilot of the Airwave’s. There have been nine subsequent albums as well as more acting (including alongside Jonathan Pryce in the award-winning film ‘The Ploughman's Lunch’), comedy work with Robin Williams, Harry Hill, Eric Idle and Bill Bailey plus a great deal of writing. Her songs have been recorded by Tina Turner, George Harrison, Lisa Stansfield, Sheena Easton, Celine Dion, UB40, Status Quo, Jimmy Nail, Paul Carrack and many more. Charlie's current album, ‘Dark Matter’, won both Album of the Year and Best Lyrics awards from the US Indie Acoustic Project and was highly acclaimed by the music press. The album features Gareth Huw Davies on five-string double bass, Ben Castle on clarinet, Jessie May Smart on violin and Tom Rees-Roberts on trumpet. Tracks from the record will feature in Charlie's forthcoming tour alongside favourites from Charlie's past albums plus some of the hits written by her for others like George Harrison and Jimmy Nail. She also regularly reinvents her own worldwide hit, ‘Pilot of the Airwaves’. Charlie's performance is always memorable and in the more intimate surroundings of her chosen venues there will be a chance for audiences to participate by singing along and to enjoy Charlie's anecdotes about her songs and the people she has worked with and written for.
