intro
Offbeat and twisted latest single from Cardiff trio the Victorian English Gentlemen's Club, the first to feature bassist Louise Mason on vocals
'La Mer' is sung, or maybe that should be spoken, in a staccato fashion by bassist Louise Mason. This is the Victorian English Gentlemen Club's first single to usw Louise Mason as a lead singer. Previously it has always been guitarist Adam Taylor. I think it works really well. All the instrumentation is kept very minimal allowing Louise's unique singing style and offbeat lyrics to shine through. That brings me nicely to the lyrics which are about a girl who goes on holiday and straight off goes sunbathing only to get cut off by the tide and drowned. 'La Mer' builds to a noisy finish. The second track, 'Stupid as Wood', builds on that noise returns to Adam singing. It is a dark poppy punk numeber and, reminding me of the darker side of the 80's, leans towards the noisier end of goth and bands such as Siouxsie and the Banshees and Killing Joke.
