Dave Goodwin finds Mancunians Slow Readers Club on the road again and lighting up The Rescue Rooms in Nottingham with their debut album 'Cavalcade'

This is frightening and exciting all at the same time. Not long ago we were standing in the Bodega - just a short walk across town from here - to witness a brilliant debut in the city of Nottingham for The Slow Readers Club. Since then they have graced the city in the wonderful Dot to Dot festival but now we have entered a much bigger venue which again they have sold out - my favourite Rescue Rooms. I said it was frightening because the step up has been phenomenally quick going from the The Bodega to the Rescues, and I said exciting because for me The Slow Readers Club are the most interesting new band in the UK today. After only just releasing their debut album this year they have embarked on a string of live gigs and they are doing it right. They are getting out there and advertising themselves where they can and it is working wonders. I must make a point of mentioning the support here tonight which comes in the form of Desperate Journalist from London who were blindingly good. Not the first time I have seen them either and a band who have also got much better. On to the man act, and from the moment the four-piece - Aaron Starkie on vocals, Kurtis Starkie on guitar and backing vocals, Jim Ryan on bass and David Whitworth on drums - hit the stage, the crowd never stopped cheering and singing and shouting the now football-esque 'Readers'. The Mancunians, who specialise in guitar-electro pop, have been attracting huge crowds at summer festival appearances including Tramlines, Kendal Calling, Victorious Festival, Ramsbottom Festival and Castlepalooza Festival and it was just this time last year that they played three SOLD OUT headline shows at O2 Ritz Manchester, Whelans Dublin and Oslo Hackney. I first witnessed them at James' 'Girl at the End of the World' tour and they went on 15 dates including London's Forum, Brixton Academy and Manchester Arena. They played a mixture of most of their album along with tracks that didn't make it but have been resurrected. We were also told that some of these are well on the way to making up the numbers on the next album. They seemed twice as confident this time as they did last time I saw them and you can see the professionalism oozing out of The Slow Readers the more they go on. Aaron Starkie is manifesting into one hell of a frontman dictating to the crowd and making them join in at will and had them shouting for more before they came back out for the three-song encore that finished with the brilliant 'I Saw a Ghost'. Not satisfied with selling the Rescues out, as I type this report I learn that they have just sold out the rest of the tour. And does that surprise me?
