Impressive combination of feedback and retro on fourth album from Danish duo the Raveonettes
‘Lust, Lust, Lust’ is the fourth album from my favourite band of recent years, the Raveonettes. The Raveonettes have now left Columbia/Sony/BMG and are glad they have. They will now release records on different labels of the indie variety in different countries. In the UK their new home is Fierce Panda, which is owned by former NME writer Simon Williams and whom knows a good tune when he hears one. ‘Lust, Lust, Lust' starts with one of the album's highlight's ‘Aly, Walk with Me’ which begins sounding like a cool 50’s beatnik tale of teenage lust. It is sung as a duet between Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo, and as it progresses it develops into a total wall of feedback that puts the Jesus and Mary Chain, Sonic Youth and the Velvet Underground to shame. This opening track is my personal favourite song of the year from my favourite album. ‘Hallucinations’ is more restrained with minimal guitar. Beautifully sung, it has strong hints of their debut mini album, ‘Whip It On', until the guitars kick in, then it is loud as hell. ‘Lust’ has a slow drum beat and is sung in a heartbroken way by Sune again in a 50’s retro fashion with some great Duane Eddy style twanging guitar. ‘Dead Sound’, which is sung as a duet and is the first single off the album, comes next. ‘Black Satin’ which follows is sung by Sharin. It is loud with full-on guitars and very jangly and easy to sway along too. ‘Blush’ has Sune on vocals. Not so furious in sound but played in a similarly fast fashion, it could be a sequel to ‘Black Satin’. Its chorus is sung as a duet. ‘Expelled from Love’ closes the first side of the vinyl version of the album. The intro sounds the feedback intro to the Jesus and Mary Chain’s ‘In a Hole'. Sung as a duet, with very mournful and sad vocals, it has slowly hit guitar strings. ‘My Heartbeat's Dying’ is the vinyl LP's exclusive track, and combines white noise with a Christmas like beat. It is loud and full on but sad but heartwarming too at the same time. ‘You Want the Candy’ has hit single written all over it. Again it is very full on featuring very loud guitars and it makes you want to move your ass to its rhythm. It could have easily have fitted onto their last album, ‘Pretty in Black.’ ‘Blitzed’ has a fast rhythm which recalls Eddie Cochran’s ‘Something Else.’ It is very loud and absolutely lovely. ‘Sad Transmission’ has hand clap-style beats with fuzzy, feedbacking guitars in the background and is sung as a slow duet. ‘With My Eyes Closed’ is another heartwarming duet, and, while it sounds like it is an acoustic number, it is in fact played on electric guitars. The album ends with ‘The Beat Dies’ which is sung by Sharin and is very unlike the Raveonettes in that it sounds like a 1950’s film soundtrack of the ‘Ben Hur’ variety, albeit drowned in feedback. A damn fine fourth album.
