intro
Our new series Video Vault was inspired by insomnia. I have trouble sleeping sometimes, and in the very early hours flicking through the higher numbers on my television’s remote controls, amidst ancient, long forgotten comedies and forty-year old game shows, found an 80’s usic video channel, which I watched for a couple of hours.
The next morning in my bleary-eyed state, I could not remember most of what I had seen. I realised then that out of the thousands of videos I had watched over the years the number I could remember were in double figures. I mentioned this to some of our writers and photographers, and that led to an online chat about what made a stand-out video, and Video Vault was born, the simple task which is for a different writer with each edition to write about a video and why it is memorable to them. We start with a double edition, Fiona Hutchings on Belouis Some’s controversial video for ‘Imagination’ and Adrian Jane on the elegiac video for Johnny Cash’s final single ‘Hurt’. Thank you to Steev Burgess, Adam Coxon, Julie Cruickshank, Nick Dent-Robinson, Ian Dunn, Dixie Ernill, Dave Goodwin, Zena Greig, Tommy Gunnarsson, Fiona Hutchings, Adrian Janes, Richard Lewis, Eoghan Lyng, Shirley Procter, Maarten Schiethart, Helen Tipping Lisa Torem, Andrew Twambley, Denzil Watson and Amanda J, Window, all of whom have contributed to this edition. Special thanks to our webmaster Richard Banks, without whom none of this would be possible. Please check out our regular Facebook, Instagram and X updates. Thank you for reading Pennyblackmusic.
