intro
Raucous but monotonous fuzzy grunge rock on debut album from New Zealand duo Earth Tongue
Earth tongues are reputedly magic mushrooms of some kind. Whereas in stark contrast the clarity in music and vocals of the Kiwi duo Earth Tongue stands out as being simply amazing. Far from doped out, the album is a rather untimely combination of clearly spoken words over rowdy and rumbling roars of music. Initially sounding a wee bit oblique, this quaint combination ultimately makes its point. Rolling on and rolling off, as if being chased by the Gods of Thunder, Earth tongue blast out at full volume their blithering aberrations of rock'n roll. 'Microscopic God' kicks off the album in thunderous fashion. Next, Earth Tongue lick on another poisonous frog and leap into a new frenzy. Guitarist Gussie Larkin and Ezra Simons on drums and vocals are responsible for the racket of noise here. Halfway through the album, one tends to think that it might be time for a third or fourth member to bring on great new ideas. These don't come. The momentum starts to wane. Ever so mightily energetic in their own right, Earth Tongue start to recall the Sex Gang Children who were equally mundane in their attempt to sound special. It is too early to tell if Earth Tongue will fail. 'Floating Being' is, however, ultimately a rather flat affair which seems bereft of genuine talent.
