intro
Confident early 60's-influenced garage pop on vinyl-only single from Copenhagen-based quartet, the Youth
The Youth is a quartet from Copenhagen, Denmark which consists of the following players: Jesper Jensen (guitar, vocals), Lasse Tarp (guitar, vocals), David Peter Jorgensen (bass) and Sune Christian Thomsen(drums, percussion). Their new single features 'I’ll Call Your Bluff' and 'You’ve Done Me Wrong'. It was recorded in the summer season at Ponswood Hit Factory, Hastings. 'I’ll Call Your Bluff' begins with a powerful bass line and some veiled, vocal accusations. This song is about a lover who feels cheated and manipulated. You can hear the angst not only in the spewing but in the shredding. It’s a confident arrangement which draws strong comparisons to the Kinks, instrumentally, and John Lennon, vocally. Singer Lasse Tarp’s delivery is raw and primordial, like Lennon in the early ballads. There’s also surprisingly cheerful, twangy guitar that offsets the angry voice. It so genuinely captures the early 1960s sound. 'You've Done Me Wrong' is, again, Kinks-like but the guitar sounds like early Ventures. It’s straight-ahead pop with call and response with some screaming and a aurprise ending. Both songs are extremely entertaining, and it’s uncanny how they have identified the sounds from this era and then served them up so successfully. The Youth is only a two-year-old band, but they’ve been taking Europe and the UK by storm. Their output so far has included releasing this debut single, but they are also on the verge of releasing another single and an album on State Records. If you love to dance, sing along or simply enjoy being transported to one of pop music’s greatest eras, you will love this charming new single by the Youth. Sometimes tells me we’ll be hearing a lot more great music from
