intro
Anthony Strutt discovers rising local act the Jim Jones Revue able to capture the spirit of the late 50s and early 60s with their energetic rock 'n' roll at a gig at London's legendary 100 Club
The Jim Jones Revue are one of the hottest new bands playing London clubs at the moment. Jim Jones, their front man, is the former singer with Thee Hypnotics, who were signed to Situation2/Beggars in the late 80s and early 90s and who were in the mode of the Stooges and especially MC5. The Revue also play retro style music, but this time it is great 50’s style rock n roll. As well as Jones who is dressed like one of the Hives, the Revue also consists of Rupert Orton on guitar, which may explain why his sister Beth Orton was in the audience; Elliot Mortimer on piano ; Gavin Jay on bass and Nick Jones on drums. Tonight they bring sweat back into this venue in the basement of 100 Oxford Street, which was the home to both 50s Jazz and early punk. They play a set of fourteen songs in just under an hour. It catches the spirit of the great late 50s and early 60s and it is like seeing the early raw Beatles at the Star Club in Hamburg in 1961 except this band can play. Their music is an infusion of the sounds of Little Richard, Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis with its wild guitars and crazy piano solos. The spirit of ‘Good Golly Miss Molly’ was present across most of their songs. A hot and very sweaty night indeed, at which Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie was also there giving his love to this band.
