intro
Joyous old time soul on new single from Robert Wyatt, who has teamed up with French composer and musician, Bernard Burgalat
A surprise move from the honourable Robert Wyatt, who has teamed up with composer Burgalat for an old time soul tune. Burgalat is one of those responsible for the renewed interest in Serge Gainsbourg's musica, but on 'This Summer Night' his cinematic arrangements borrow a bit from Willie Mitchell, the producer for Ann Peebles, Al Green, and Syl Johnson. 'This Summer Night' is a most joyous song, showing that Robert Wyatt's voice is still in fabulous condition. Hot Chip must have felt extremely pleased to get an invitation to remix 'This Summer Night'. Hot Chip's recent recordings have been a little too bubblegummy for my taste yet their usual tricks, of tingling little synthesizer riffs and a pubby bass pumping all the way down, do give 'This Summer Night' a slightly exotic feel on their remix on the flip. 'This Summer Night' shall not be this year's Christmas number one but Radio 1 or Radio 2 would be much better with this on the A-playlist. It has got the string arrangement, beats and words required for a hit record scraping the bottom end of the Top 20. Robert Wyatt is such a perfect knight!
