intro
Excellent first single in seven years for the much acclaimed the Wedding Present
When the Wedding Present were put on hold in 1997, David Gedge formed Cinerama together with his then-girlfriend Sally Murrell, and released the great 'Va Va Voom' album a year or so later. But what was meant to be David's solo project soon developed into a new band, and, as years have passed by, Cinerama's sound has more and more started to be like the Wedding Present, so when Cinerama recorded their fourth album earlier this year, David decided to bring back the name of his former band. The album is expected early next year, but we are already treated to a taster, and if the rest of the album tastes this good, I can't wait to get my hands on it! The main song on this 3-track single, 'Interstate 5', sounds like something off the Wedding Present's mid-period albums, 'Seamonsters' and 'Mini', which isn't that strange really, as it's produced by Steve Fisk, who also handled the controls on the 'Seamonsters' album. Still, it sounds a lot like Cinerama to me, but I guess that is because Gedge's voice has developed a lot since we last heard the Wedding Present, and I'm used to hear him sing this way in Cinerama. That will probably change soon, as I will undoubtedly listen quite a lot to this record, at least until the album is out. The two remaining songs are very good too. 'Bad Things' sounds like a typical Cinerama song at first, but has a rocking chorus, while 'Snapshots' reminds me of how great Cinerama were when they made big, orchestral songs. But that was then, and this is now, and I welcome the Weddoes back with open arms. There's talk about a tour next year, and hopefully that will bring them to Sweden too. I'll see you there!
