Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Babylon, Ottawa, 29/6/2004

intro

Jon Spencer has been playing his unique brand of the blues for nearly 20 years now. Andrew Carver watches him hold his audience enraptured in a long, sweaty set at Babylon in Ottawa

Jon Spencer has been wreaking havoc on the corpus of rock and blues for several years now – to think, Pussy Galore’s debut recording, the 7” 'Feel Good About Your Body' came out in October 1985 – but his recorded work, both with that group and his eponymous Blues Explosion, has always come with the provision that you had to see him live. Ottawa got its first chance to do just that on a pleasant Tuesday night, when more than 300 hardy souls jammed into the strip joint turned music club Babylon. The opening act was the Double Pumpers, a popular local group with a love of 1970s hard rock, topped off with heavy riffs and some sludgy psyche. The packed club was nice and sweaty by the time Spencer (wearing an alarmingly hot pair of PVC pants), drummer Russell Simmons and second guitarist Judah Bauer took the stage. Burdened with a guitar and vocal duties as he is (and he practically swallowed the microphone at times), Spencer is deprived of the acrobatic opportunities of someone who only has to hold a microphone, but he made up for it with some knee drops and the occasional leap while howling his way through a long set of deconstructed, if not totally destroyed blues. The audience was enraptured and moved along in time to the music as well as they could; you could feel the floor heave. The set culminated in some cacophonous manipulation of a pseudo-Theremin that had everyone in the club brave enough not to bring plugs sticking their fingers in their ears. After listing a long litany of his travels, Spencer then declared “But I’ve never seen anything as craaaaazy as O-ta-waaah!” – but he probably says that in every town. The band returned for a fairly long encore, then retired with an Elvisy “Thangyuuhverymuch.”
