intro
Surprisingly unmelodic and disappointing debut mini album by new Edinburgh band which features ex-members of the Marvellous Mechanical Mouse Organ and Khaya
Edinburgh have spawned some great bands during the last couple of years. There is, of course, ballboy, but also bands, like the Marvellous Mechanical Mouse Organ and Khaya, have made some great songs for us to enjoy. Sadly, both these latter bands called it a day last year, the Mouse Organ without getting a proper release out, which is a great shame. So, when I read that Desc contains members of both these bands, I was a little bit curious. And when I also saw that ballboy’s own Gordon McIntyre was a guest star on their debut album, I certainly wanted to have a listen. But I was disappointed, to say the least. I expected to hear some nice little poptunes, or maybe some rough poptunes (in the style of Khaya), but what I got coming out of my speakers were noises and various other strange sounds. But no melodies. The only track on this 7-track album worthy of the “song” attribute is 'Joy', which is actually the song upon which Gordon sings. So, Desc got by with a little help from their friend. But next time they may not be so lucky. On the SL Records website it says that Desc have already recorded a new album, and also music for a photo exhibition that Helena MacGilp (a member of Desc) has made. That honestly doesn’t sound too exciting.
