intro
Sparkling, soulful debut album from Scottish singer-songwriter Brooke Combe
Going viral in the depths of COVID in 2020 with her distinctive cover of Baccara’s ‘Yes Sir, I Can Boogie’, rising Scottish soul singer-songwriter Brooke Combe has now brought out her debut album. ‘Dancing At The Edge Of The World’, written in the aftermath of a break-up, is a colourful mix of lushly orchestrated, tuneful 1songs, carried by Combe’s sultry, melodic vocals, the soul influence pervasive: “ I do feel I’ve got a soul voice so going forward that’s really th Songs to listen out for in this eleven-track collection include: the first song, the breezy, catchy ‘This Town'’ (with its atmospheric video) about breaking away from the town Combe was raised in: “I break the rules I’m making/Can’t stop myself from faking/Must be the shit I’m taking/…Gotta get out of this town”; the bluesy, soulful ‘Guilt’ with its plaintive lyrics about the harmful effect of a toxic relationship: “You’re no good for me/And it’s giving me a pain/Only you can heal/... But I love it”; the self-empowering ‘Shaken By The Wind’: ”I begin to grow/Into my own rose/…I’m going to take my chances now/And I will go running”; the ebullient ‘Lanewood Pines’, celebrating the start of a new relationship; and the closer, the effervescent title track (after a phrase describing Marilyn Monroe) with its message of hope held by Combe’s soaring vocals. Mellow, engaging, ‘Dancing At The Edge Of The World’ is a sparkling, upbeat debut album by an inventive, charismatic musician.
