Sensual and experimental latest album from genre-bending artist FKA twigs

The latest release by Cheltenham-born, genre-bending multi-platform artist FKA twigs (Tahliah Debrett Barnett), following the critically acclaimed 2019 ‘Magdalene’ and 2022 mixtape ‘Caprisongs’, is a vibrant mix of avant-pop. ‘Eusexua’, her third album, evidences as inspiration the techno music twigs encountered in the nightclubs of Prague while shooting a film. Twigs expounded on the choice of album title: “Eusexua is a state of being… a feeling of momentary transcendence often evoked by art, music, sex, and unity… followed by a surge of bliss and feelings of limitless possibility”. This is an album infused with feelings of joy, escape and euphoria, an ambience co-orchestrated with a range of notable producers including Koreless (aka musician and DJ Lewis Roberts) and Marius de Vries (Bjork, David Bowie, Madonna), at the core of the album a serene self-acceptance. Songs to listen out for in this this eleven-track collection include: the epic, seven minutes fifty-seven second opener and title track about connection and transcendence through intimacy; ode to womanhood ‘Girl Feels Good’ with its engaging synth motif; pulsating, techno-pop single ‘Perfect Strangers’ with its entreaty to retain a sense of mystery in a one-night stand; ‘Drums Of Death’ with its thundering beat and chopped vocals, an imaginative concoction after K-pop rapper G-Dragon’s 2012 single ‘One Of A Kind’; delicate ballad ‘Sticky’ with its emotive lines: “My body aches to be known/To be expressive in itself/I want to forgive myself/I want to release myself from the pain I have inside/My body wants to be touched in the deepest and darkest places/I want to be loved” with its jarring musical outro; ‘Keep It, Hold It’ with its choral quintet; quirky, fun ‘Childlike Things’, featuring the reciting of a verse in Japanese by eleven-year old North West, daughter of Kanye West and Kim Kardashian; soulful, expressive ‘Striptease’; and the cathartic closer, ‘Wanderlust’. Experimental, sensual, ‘Eusexua’ is an intriguing next step in this artist’s innovative journey.
