intro
Colourful ninth album from alternative rock icons Pixies which reveals a band still evolving
Boston alternative rock quartet Pixies have brought out a new album, their ninth, 'The Night The Zombies Came', following up on the acclaimed 2022 ‘Doggerel’. With the new addition of British ex-Band of Skulls bassist Emma Richardson, the band have adopted a horror theme for the record, a current of existential dread running throughout. The songs are a diverse mix of their trademark indie rock, showing an eclectic array of inspirations from druidism to apocalyptic shopping malls and medieval-themed restaurants. Songs to listen out for in this thirteen-track collection include: the folk opener, exploring what is real and what is only imagined; the propulsive rocker and previously released single ‘You’re So Impatient’ with Joey Santiago’s distorted guitar; imaginative, atmospheric ‘Hypnotised’ with its sestina-structured lyrics; the melodic rocker ‘Johnny Good Man’; catchy ‘Motoroller’, highlighting Emma Richardson’s soulful vocals; the contemplative, Leonard Cohen-inspired ‘Mercy Me’ with frontman Black Francis and Richardson sharing the vocals; and the closer Francis said was based on the 1950s hit ‘Que Sera, Sera’, the anthemic ‘The Vegas Suite’ with its soaring harmonies, 70s vibes and sardonic lines: “I’ve broken my leg/Back in Las Vegas/But they were so gracious/I doubled my wages”. Quirky, cinematic, ‘The Night The Zombies Came’ sees this colourful band still evolving.
