intro
On their sixth proper album, Newcastle twee punkers Milky Wimpshake keep on doing what they do best, playing punkpop with clever and political lyrics
This is actually the fifth Milky Wimpshake review I have written for Pennyblackmusic, and in reading the previous four I have realised that this review will say more or less the same. In my review of their last album, 'Heart and Soul in the Milky Way', I noted that nothing had happened in the Milky Wimpshake universe for the past decade or so, and well... I might as well have been writing that sentence again this time around. BUT! One thing has happened! The band has added a backing vocalist, Sophie Evans. Her voice can be heard on most of the songs here, and she even sings a duet or two with frontman Pete Dale. According to the press release that came with the record, she wasn't even born when the band started playing, which means that she must have been born sometime in the mid 90s. Apart from that though, it's still tweeish punk pop, and the lyrics are still clever and funny most of the time. And, keeping with the band's tradition, we also get to hear a cover version. This time it's 'Heterosexuality is a Construct' by Onsind. The watchful reader may have noticed that the album title is in French, and we are even treated to some French lyrics when Pete Dale sings in that very same language for the first time on the track 'Le Revolution Politique'. As you probably realise, the band is as political as ever, and I'm glad they are. Otherwise it wouldn't be Milky Wimpshake, after all...
