Label: Rise Above Records
Format: CD

intro

Fabulous 1970's-influenced heavy metal/psychedelia on third album from Cambridgeshire-based group, Uncle Acid and The Deadbeats

Decked out in hippy hair and fringed jackets, Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats have their musical sights set somewhere where Woodstock's brown acid meets 1972's burgeoning heavy metal scene. 'Mt. Abraxas' trudges from the same lizard-brain as Black Mountain and Comets on Fire, a fuzzy opus that sounds like it was recorded in a barn with one microphone. The dirty riffs on tracks like 'Mind Control' and 'Evil Love' worship at the altars of both by Blue Cheer and Blue Oyster Cult, while tracks like 'Poison Apple' come off like a down-on-their-heels Queens of the Stone Age. For those who like their plod a bit more narcoleptic there is 'Desert Ceremony', while 'Death Valley Blues' sounds like something the late-era Beatles might have cooked up on a particularly toned Sunday afternoon, with some extra distortion on top. 'Follow The Leader' provides some cult-friendly drone and 'Valley Of The Dolls' slows down to ogle some Fu Manchu cover girls. Spooky vocals throughout keep 'Mind Control' on a steady course both thematically and sonically, with 'Devil's Work' capping the album with an ideal statement of purpose - keeping music nasty should always sound this good.
