intro
Startingly mature and totally compelling debut album from Australian pop act, Cloud Control
Keeping up with the talent Oz has been churning out over the last few years, with bands such as the Temper Trap and the Holidays enjoying the media spotlight, is no mean feat, but it seems that Cloud Control are poised to do this and much more with debut album ‘Bliss Release’– a riveting, hook-laden collection of instant classics from Sydney’s finest. In fact, they needn’t just worry about the competition they’ll be facing about their home country, as this seriously good record may just propel them into the big leagues worldwide. Kicking proceedings off with the Devendra Banhart-esque folk of ‘Meditation Song #2’, the record meanders into anthemic terrain with latest single ‘There’s Nothing in the Water We Can’t Fight’, touching on everything from reflective pathos with ‘Hollow Drums’ to the sweetly infectious joy of first single ‘Gold Canary’. Yet at its core is an inspiring pop sensibility; great verses, great choruses – great music. Like Vampire Weekend, Mystery Jets, or MGMT before they lost the plot, Cloud Control have produced a debut of startling maturity and rare musical quality; one which deserves all the praise going. It may only be April, but I defy anyone to produce a record as captivating, catchy and as downright brilliant as ‘Bliss Release’ before the year’s out.
