intro
Intriguing second album from eccentric duo Panther, which, while occasionally missing the mark, matches David Byrne in zaniness at its best
Extended to a twosome after their first album, Panther drop a cunning second platter on Kill Rock Stars. Drummer Joe Kelly from the band 31 Knots joins Charlie Salas-Humara and proves to be the appropriate musician to point this multi-instrumental frontman in the right direction. '14Kt God' is a busy sounding sequence of thirteen tracks squeezed into just over an half hour. No drum solos of course. Decisions, decisions indeed. In just a few lines, Panther captures politics in the USA today. Panther's initial idiosyncrasy receive a thorough streamlined treatment on '14Kt God' and an intriguing whirlwind is the result. Most tracks clock in at under two-and-a-half minutes but even these wacky stints touch on a wealth of tricks. It's certainly not at all original content, although how can there be any harm in a Burroughs type of cut-up of David Byrne-ish zaniness? Burn all your remastered Talking Heads CDs and catch Panther! Panther may take on too much and the album knows its flaws and flat points but this is only due to the wealth of ideas that went into '14Kt God'.
