intro
Fantastic new single from Morrissey, with an impressive collection of live tracks on its B sides
‘That's How People Grow Up’ is the first single by Morrissey from his current new ‘Greatest Hits’ collection, and the first of two new songs which are collected on it. It starts with an opera style howl from Kristen Young who was signed to Attack Records, his former label which released his last two albums and with whom Morrissey has also toured with in the past. We are then joined by some beefed-up guitar and a vocal from Morrissey that shows that, if you ever fell under his spell, he has lost none of his magic, A lot of people might say that this is just Morrissey by numbers, being miserable as usual and singing about love not coming knocking on your door. It is about that, but it is also about getting on with your life if it doesn't. It is a great song about human faith and going forward. The B side of the CDS is a live reading of his third solo single, ‘The Last of the Famous International Playboys’, and was recorded at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City on the 27th October 2007 . While the original studio recording was fantastic, this live version is much superior with a much stronger solo towards the end. As was the CD of Morrissey’s last album, ‘Ringleaders of the Tormentors’, the CDS here is pressed to look like a vinyl single with an original Decca style label. There are two separate seven inches as well. The first features as a B side a live version of the great 1984 Smiths single, ‘The Boy with the Thorn in His Side’, and was recorded at the Orpheum Theatre in Nebraska on the 5th November last year. The crowd go mad for this, and it's no wonder. It is a cracking version with much more jangly guitar then the previous Smiths version. The B side of the second single is a live version of ‘Why Don’t You Find Out for Yourself’, is a great solo Morrissey track, that I rate as one of my favourite songs of his solo career, This version, recorded at Thanksgiving Point, Lehi in Utah on the 15th October 2007 is sadly given an easy listening vibe and an added taste of squeeze box accompaniment which gives it a European flavouring.
