intro
Perfect upbeat pop on solo debut album from Nelson Bragg, who, as well as playing in several other bands simultaneously, has been Brian Wilson's percussionist for several years
A sideman of some repute, Nelson Bragg has been Brian Wilson’s percussionist of choice for several years, as well as a member of several other bands simultaneously ! Consequently it’s hardly surprising that it’s taken him quite so long to finally get around to recording his first solo album. Produced by respected pop producer Steve Refling and augmented by some of L.A.’s finest pop performers, including Nick Walusko (Brian Wilson, the Wondermints), Probyn Gregory (Brian Wilson), Mike Randle (Baby Lemonade, Love), Rick Gallego (Cloud Eleven) and less obviously the string section from the Stockholm Strings N’ Horns, for many the results will be pop heaven. Multi-tracking his vocals has worked a treat, although on his version of George Harrison’s ‘Dark Sweet Lady’ he sounds a little outside his comfort zone. Elsewhere though, Bragg’s harmonies, the lush melodies and shimmering flourishes of instrumental prowess shine through with impressive regularity; both Rick Gallego’s subtle pedal steel on ‘Forever Days’ and ‘Death Of Caroline’ as well as Probyn Gregory’s horns on ‘Lived This Life Too Long’ are especially effective. During the long gloom of winter I can’t recommend a better remedy; Nelson Bragg’s very appealing debut offering respite and a delightful antidote to this time of year when the days dissipate into night all too soon.
