Grammy and Brit Award winning New Zealand singer-songwriter Ella Yelich-O’Connor aka Lorde has brought out her fourth album, “Virgin”. With a number of contributions from co-producers, including Jim-E Stack and Dan Nigro, “Virgin” is a deeply personal mix of visceral songs, pervaded by a defiant, unabashed storytelling, replete with graphic imagery; in Lorde’s words “Be plain with language and see what happens”. Following up on her 2021 ‘Solar Power’ album, which received mixed reviews, this new record is one on which Lorde’s vocals and lyrics are the most prominent features, a sense of urgency prevailing throughout. Highlights of this eleven-track collection include: the electro, synth-driven opener ‘Hammer’ on desire, setting the scene for the album; lead single ‘What Was That’ about a failed relationship; ‘Shapeshifter’ with its anguished exploration of self; gender-defying ‘Man Of The Year’ with its unadulterated, unpolished sound, inspired by her attendance at the GQ event; anthemic ‘Favourite Daughter’ about what it means to be a woman; gentler, hypnotic ‘Current Affairs’ with its distorted dance-hall vibe on a passing affair which went wrong; the sparse, a capella ‘Clearblue’, after a pregnancy test; propulsive dance track ‘GRWM’; and the plaintive, excoriating ‘Broken Glass’, with its techno-beat, about overcoming an eating disorder: “I spent my summer getting lost in math/Making weight took all I had”. Bold, authentic and unashamedly in your face, ‘Virgin’ is a raw, introspective record which leaves nothing implicit.
