intro

Companion piece to last year's ‘Tension’from Kylie which takes her back deep into the sounds of clubland

At 56, Kylie Minogue is showing no sign of slowing down. This year she closed the show at the BRITs (where she won the Global Icon award), completed a Las Vegas residency, headlined British Summer Time in London's Hyde Park and recorded duets with Orville Peck, Sia, The Blessed Madonna, Bebe Rexha and Tove Lo. Next Spring Kylie plans to be back on the road with her biggest arena tour in more than a decade – and she has now released a new album, ‘Tension II; which is a companion piece to last year's ‘Tension’, and takes her back deep into the sounds of clubland. It is a celebration of high-octane disco music - everything that Kylie does best! Kylie says her renewed appetite for dance music goes back to 2020’s ‘Disco”’ an album Kylie recorded in lockdown, skilfully producing her own vocals. That record was inspired by the nostalgic attitude of Dua Lipa and Sophie Ellis-Bextor, both of whom Kylie admires. Last year's single ‘Padam Padam”’ (also featured on ‘Tension’) was in similar vein and it gave Kylie her first UK Top Ten in over 12 years. Ina Wroldsen co-wrote that song with Kylie and she has worked with her again on ‘Tension II’ adding euphoric hooks and an electronic sheen to ‘Lights Camera Action’, ‘Tabon’ and ‘Hello’. ‘Dance To The Musi’ is reminiscent of the Kylie of old and the syncopated ‘Diamonds’ takes inspiration from 2001's huge hit ‘Can't Get You Out Of My Head’. There are some moments of introspection, too. On ‘Someone For Me’ Kylie congratulates a friend who has found love but also askes “selfishly” if they could find a Mr Right for her, too. On this album Kylie has used all the home recording skills she learned during lockdown and has overseen the technical aspects on several tracks, gaining a credit as “vocal recording engineer”. She has added a touch of auto-tune to her voice - but, quite rightly, she ensures her own performance is always placed front and centre throughout this album. Nine new songs are augmented by duets released earlier this year. ‘Dance Alone’ is sung with fellow Australian Sia and ‘Edge Of Saturday Night’ with synths and classic house piano sees Kylie team up with London-based American DJ The Blessed Madonna. ‘Midnight Ride’ is sung with Orville Peck whilst ‘My Oh My’ features Bebe Rexha and Tove Lo. Kylie makes no attempt to compete with younger dance divas - she doesn't need to. Whilst Charli XCX and Sabrina Carpenter are candid and confessional in their writing, Kylie is more escapist. Some other singers may have greater range but very few can match Kylie's huge and natural energy and enthusiasm. ‘Tension II’ is a great Kylie record and it will delight her fans everywhere!
