Despite being ignored by many youth-orientated radio stations reluctant to champion a 55 year-old female singer, Kylie Mongue's last single release in May, ‘Padam Padam’ picked up momentum fast, was quickly a TikTok sensation and became arguably the biggest pop earworm of 2023. The song, written by talented Norwegian singer Ina Wroldsen with UK producer Pete ‘Lostboy’ Rycroft, gave Kylie her biggest hit since 2010's ‘All The Lovers’. It set the tone perfectly for Kylie's newly-released follow-up album ‘Tension’ - which is all about seizing the day and which adds nuance to Kylie's signature sound whilst still reaffirming her reputation as a consummate showgirl. “The new album is a blend of personal reflection, club abandon and melancholic high.” says Kylie. The first half of ‘Tension’ is infused with celebrations of the dancefloor. The title track with its insistent piano and breathless vocals is a surefire house music hit and ‘Hold On Now’ tells us to live in the moment. The catchy ‘One More Time’ would sit easily alongside Kylie's 1990 hits ‘Better The Devil You Know’ and ‘Step Back In Time’ whilst ‘10 Out Of 10’, made with Dutch DJ Oliver Heldens, takes inspiration from Euro-pop. As the album progresses, there are some unexpected moves with ‘Hands”’featuring hand-claps and funky bass, taking its cue from 1990s R & B rather than from 1970s disco and ‘Green Light’ is an interesting exercise in jazz-funk. ‘Story’ has delicate guitars at the start before developing into a conventional Kylie floor-filler. ‘Tension’ is Kylie's most irresistable release in years – and it confirms just how impressive a performer she still is!
