Hello and welcome to the October edition of the Pennyblackmusic magazine. As both our ‘Ten Songs That Made Me Love…’ columns in this edition prove, location can often provide the spark to musical obsession. Fiona Hutchings writes about growing up and spending her formative years in Sheffield against a backdrop of such home town heroes as The Human League, Heaven 17 and Pulp, while Andrew Twambley tells of going to university in Liverpool in the late 1970s where at the infamous Eric’s he saw acts such as The Runaways, The Clash, The Jam and Siouxsie and the Banshees. We also have our regular arsenal of interviews, live reviews, regular columns, photo galleries and reviews. In a guest feature, which we have split into two parts, both parts of which we are running consecutively, ‘Hungry Beat’ co-author and ‘Big Gold Dream’ director Grant McPhee writes of Scottish record label owner Alan Horne’s career in the music industry after the implosion of his seminal label Postcard Records, first of all with new label Swamplands and then with the resurrection of Postcard twice, once in the 1990s and then again last year. Thank you to Fiona, Andrew and Grant, As always, this magazine, however, has been brought together through the talents and enthusiasm of many people.
