intro
Excellent acoustic country-influenced third album from Sussex-based songwriter and composer Jules Winchester
The Sussex-based songwriter and composer Jules Winchester has released ‘The Beast’, her third album. A musician who has been writing her own songs and playing guitar and keyboard for over 25 years and recording her work in her Sussex home for almost as long, Jules Winchester has attracted much positive attention, appearing in local venues and singing with a range of admired professionals including Doris Brendel, Aitch McRobbie, Lynne Butler and Julie Harrington. This attractive collection of new country songs written by Jules Winchester were all produced by her too. They showcase her great musical competence as a singer, writer and musician. On ‘The Beast' Jules has assembled 10 harmonious acoustic compositions with thoughtful, emotional lyrics. The album opens with a country-style ballad ‘The Timing’s All Wrong’ and features love songs such as ‘Wake Your Soul’, ‘King George’, ‘Not A Day Too Soon’ and ‘Still Remain’. Highlights include the stripped back ‘Are You Going Insane?’ with its plaintive guitar and lyrics – “Are you going insane/Are you going mad/As you watch the rain/Is this all you had?/Don’t let them see/Any tear you cry/Cause tomorrow they gonna ask you why”. Also impressive was ‘Broken By The Storm’ with its fine harmonies and its musical arrangement neatly bringing the focus on Winchester’s powerful and emotive vocals.
