intro
Nick Dent-Robinson reflects on Jack Savoretti's bestselling no. 1 latest album, 'Singing to Strangers'.
Jack Savoretti is undertaking a national tour promoting his latest album, 'Singing to Strangers', which has given him his first UK Number 1. Jack recently played at Alex James's Big Feastival event in Oxfordshire and will be at Oxford's New Theatre on 3 November. Many more UK dates follow. Although he won't reveal the precise location, Jack's home is also in Oxfordshire on the edge of the Cotswold Hills. “I love the English countryside,” Jack says. “And that was why it was such a pleasure to perform at Alex James's brilliant festival. It was a sultry late summer evening and the live band - with guitarists Pedro Vito and Sam Lewis, bassist Sam Davies, drummer Jesper Lind and my musical director Nikolai Torp on keyboard - produces a gentle, smooth sound that the audience seemed to enjoy.” Jack's new (sixth) album is the first to top the charts with over 32,000 sales in the first few days. It was the BBC Radio 2 album of the week. “I am proud of this success,” Jack tells me. “It is the album I always wanted to make and I am so happy with the people who surrounded me making the album...each person working on it deserves so much credit. We recorded it in Rome at Ennio Morricone's studio with my live band. Luckily the studio is in the basement of a big old church so it was cooler there and we could avoid Rome's searing heat. The track 'Candlelight', which is to be a future single, really captures the feeling of that cool studio under a lovely church. The title track really just explains my job - singing to strangers and winning them over which is what I've spent most of my life trying to do." “I am also very pleased about another track, 'Touchy Situation', which was co-written with Bob Dylan. He did the lyrics a long time ago and he allowed me, through his management people, to put music to them. I am very aware how fortunate I am with that....it was an honour to be able to collaborate with Bob Dylan in that way.”
