PENNYBLACKMUSIC INDIE NIGHT MANCHESTER FRIDAY 18 OCTOBER 2019 THE PEER HAT, NORTHERN QUARTER 7pm to 10.30pm THE POPGUNS Having formed originally in the late 1980s The Popguns had a circa 17 year break, before bursting back onto the scene in 2012 with some live shows before 'Pop Fiction' the first of two new albums on Matinee Records was dropped in 2014. Back the late '80s and early '90s the band enjoyed indie chart success with most of their singles and built up a reasonable amount of positive exposure in the music press. However, after 1995’s excellent, but criminally ignored, second album, 'Love Junky', they retreated from view. Built around the stunning vocals of Wendy (Morgan) Pickles and excellent songwriting skills of Simon Pickles, The Popguns are a treat to see live, with fellow original members Greg Dixon (guitar) and Pat Walkington (bass) really bringing the songs to life. Only drummer Tony Bryant is a new addition. This show will be the band’s first in Manchester for the best part of twenty-five years, but those older songs still sound as vibrant as ever! DAVEY WOODWARD & THE WINTER ORPHANS Davey is one of indie’s great songwriters, having cut his teeth in The Brilliant Corners in the '80s and '90s and The Experimental Pop Band for nearly two decades thereafter. His ability to find magic in the mundane has always been his calling card and his work with The Winter Orphans (a collective of like-minded Bristolian musicians) is no exception to the rule. Last year’s debut album on Tapete Records is a minor classic, but the songs he has written since are even better! Expect a set packed with twisted vignettes of life and love and loss and every B-road that connects the three. Those that witnessed last summer’s packed show at Gullivers will be out in numbers again. OLLIE WINDER As the driving force behind local band The Uncertainties, Ollie Winder will be playing a rare solo set of new material and old favourites to get the night off on the right footing. Ollie clearly has his finger on the pulse of the rich historical tapestry of Manchester music with his songs offering a knowing nod or cheeky wink to the likes of Oasis, The Courteeners and The Stones Roses. Don’t miss his set. Tickets £8 in advance from https://www.wegottickets.com/event/474062 £10 on the door
