intro
Eclectic and magnificent debut album from Tel Aviv octet Time Grove which combines both the avant garde and freeform jazz
Many things bring to mind the abundance of sound heard on this funky to downbeat album. There is a glorious interaction between keyboard, brass and percussion. At times, the album features full-blown jazz mayhem. Piano riffs swirl around as if Thelonius Monk had been resurrected from his grave, Time Grove's album has a genuine wealth of ideas. As is given away in the album title, the music on this album stems from just about anywhere, and 'More Than One Thing' throughout races immediately onto the next idea to widen one's horizon. Tel Aviv is not exactly the first city to spring to mind when it comes to think of a thriving jazz music scene. It does however boast the Time Grove collective which on 'More Than One Thing' takes one decisive sharp turn after the next. Minimalizing klezmer and spicing up lounge acoustics whilst processing deep vibes, Time Grove deliver a new brand of music. The Time Grove Philharmonic on the one side and its percussionist side on the other together melt into one. There are plenty of both smooth licks and dub rhythms with irate instrumentation. Time Grove also go quite intimate and emotional, for example with warm splashes on 'Indopia'. Spooky electronica on 'Nezah', glorious jazz dub on 'A_L_P', the loose soul jazz on 'Jungle Bourjois' and the aforementioned 'Indopia' make up this wonderful dish of a compact disc. 'More Than One Thing' indeed is amazing. It's an album which blew me away as thirteen years ago the São Paulo Underground did likewise. Confident, full-blown horns. Jiggy rhythms. Complex patterns. Freewheeling and mind wandering vibes. Such notes aren't exceptional. Yet it helps a great deal, a very great deal, when the music comes with a breezy sound like this one. Time Grove's 'More Than One Thing' does deliver. It's more. It's ahead. It's new. It's challenging.
