Skinny Girl Diet - Profile

intro
Helen Tipping examines rising female noise rock duo Skinny Girl Diet, who have just released their second album 'Ideal Woman'.
Back in the '90s, I was a big fan of Hole, Babes in Toyland and L7, so I've been enjoying the Riot Grrrl revival recently, seeing PINS and enjoying another outing by L7. Skinny Girl Diet have the seal of approval from Viv Albertine of the Slits, which is a good sign. Sisters Delilah and Ursula Holliday have been playing together as a band since 2010, initially with their cousin Amelia Cutler in the band, and now playing as a two-piece band with guitar & drums. They are London-based, and are part of the punk DIY scene, standing out not just because they are young, but because they are women of colour in what remains a predominantly white male scene. Skinny Girl Diet are probably a bit heavier than the music I'd normally listen to, but their songs are well-crafted feminist commentaries - sadly, needed today more than ever. The days of equality seem as far away as they did when I was their age. Their name is a comment on the existence of a real Skinny Girl Diet, aimed at fast weight loss, when they wanted people to find the band during internet searches - they do now seem to occupy more of my Google search than the diet does. I'm hoping they stick around: young people need to come into the punk & DIY scene to prevent it getting stale and old, and they bring with them new views and a slightly different political slant in their lyrics. They have seen the failures of the past, and embraced the technological changes that have happened since the '80s and '90s. Can they make the difference that previous generations of punk DIYers haven't made? That remains to be seen.
