intro
Gripping blues rock on third album from critically-acclaimed San Diego duo Little Hurricane
San Diego, America is where the Little Hurricane story begins. After having placed a musicians-wanted ad on Craigslist main player CC trawled through the myriad of respondents and came up with Tone, a studio engineer who'd worked with artists ranging from John Paul Jones to Gwen Stefani. Oddly, the two musicians were neighbours but had never met. Even more oddly, their interests were the same and included the blues and unusual and vintage gear. They had had other individual yet uncannily similar experiences as well, and both had played in high school jazz bands. A year later, Little Hurricane won three San Diego Music Awards, including Album of the Year for their 2011 debut offering 'Homewrecker'. They have toured throughout North America, Europe, and Australia, both as a headliner and main support for artists including the Specials, Manchester Orchestra, and John Butler Trio. Little Hurricane's music has appeared on shows including 'Gossip Girl', 'Revenge', 'Mistresses', and ESPN's 'First Take' and also been included in a quartet of Taco Bell TV commercials. 'Homewrecker' was followed three years later by 'Gold Fever' (2014). The twelve new songs on 'Same Sun, Same Moon' go back to the style displayed on the first album , retaining the honesty and immediacy of that earlier work. You only need to go as far as 'Bad Business' which, incidentally, was featured in PlayStation's MLB The Show 16 and the wonderful thumping instrumental 'March of the Living' to recognise that. But there are changes here that highlight the band's craving to exceed its dirty blues roots and unite with a wider range of music lovers. The changes are particularly apparent on 'OTL', a love song driven by minimalist keyboards and their classic vocals. Their philosophy surrounding this disc is governed by the fact that, as they say, "We may not all share the same beliefs, but people are still more alike than different. No matter if you're in San Diego or South Africa, living 10,000 years ago or today, we all look up to see the same sun and same moon. We are all connected in one way or another." A very nice record.
