intro
Gorgeous yet monotonous second solo album from former Last December front man Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Pete RG
Pete RG is in love and wants the world to know it. ‘Tender Souls’ is the second solo album of the Greek-American Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter and former Last December front man, and is inspired by his romance with his engineer, co-producer, mixer, keyboardist and now fiancée Brina Kabler. “Lately, it is you and I against the world,” croons RG on album opener ‘Our Escape’, and “She’s a magic lover/With a magic strength/And she gets me to so” about Kabler on the closing track, the anthemic ‘Magic’. It all sounds gorgeous. RG’s rich voice is baritone and beautiful, and is matched by shimmering, glistening guitar and keyboard lines that recall the classic 80’s Euro pop of A-ha on their ‘Scoundrel Days’ and ‘Stay on These Roads’ albums. The problem is that there is not enough in between. The music never stretches much beyond this blueprint, and songs such as ‘Divine’, ‘Heaven Knows’, ‘True Love’, the title track and ‘Here and Now’ all return again and again to the main theme that for RG and Kabler their love is everything. One can’t begrudge Pete RG his optimism and happiness. ‘Tender Love’ never sounds less than lovely, but unfortunately it is, however, also too much of a good thing.
