intro
Nick Dent-Robinson is impressed by this year's Cornbury Festival in Oxfordshire, which this year included performances from Bryan Ferry, Seal, Corinne Bailey Rae, Beverley Knight, Booker T and Wilko Johnson
The annual Cornbury music festival ran this year from Friday 8 July to Sunday 10 July in the picturesque setting of Great Tew Park, near Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire. Headline acts included Bryan Ferry, Seal, Jamie Cullen, All Saints, Corinne Bailey Rae, Beverley Knight, Booker T and Wilko Johnson – who received a huge welcome from the audience, having survived treatment for cancer. The event is known locally as “Poshstock” - and, as usual, a range of celebrities who live locally were to be found wandering around the site including local MP David Cameron's wife Samantha and children, Jeremy Clarkson, Angus Deayton, Tim Rice, Kate Moss, Liz Hurley, singer Sandie Shaw, Kate Bush and actors Orlando Seale and Helena Bonham-Carter. Singer Hannah Grace, one of Cornbury's acts this year, commented, “This festival is just so lush and impossibly cool. Unlike Glastonbury, you can actually see the beautiful green grass too. And there is a great family feel. Really special. ” Old-Etonian festival director Hugh Phillimore reflected, “This has been another great year for Cornbury. It has been a joy. Bryan Ferry was on fire with a 90 minute set full of hits while Jamie Cullen was just amazing. All our headliners really delivered. The site looked great and the family-friendly atmosphere was wonderful, as ever. Over seventy five per cent of our audience return every year which is wonderful. It is hard work but when it is over you do get a sense of a job well done - though we start now on plans for Cornbury 2017." “Some other highlights for me were Booker T's performance of 'Purple Rain' as a tribute to Prince. And of course Wilko Johnson's set was great. I remember him so well from his Dr Feelgood days and he was here three years ago playing a 'farewell' tour after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. It was here at Cornbury that Charlie Chan - a cancer surgeon who also photographs rock stars for a hobby - first met Wilko. Charlie is now credited with saving Wilko's life by linking him with another surgeon who was able to successfully remove Wilko's tumour. Mr Chan joined Wilko on stage here at Cornbury on Friday – which was very emotional. It was so nice to see Wilko thanking Charlie for saving his life. That was a very special moment for everyone.”
