intro
Lewd but hilarious third album from tongue-in-cheek Nottinghamshire-based garage rockers, the Hip Priests
I am biased about this album because I know the reprobates involved here. The Hip Priests, if you look at YouTube or their Facebook page, portray themselves to be a bunch of filthy, girl-loving, leather/denim-cladded, foul-mouthed punks. And it won't come as any surprise when I tell you that's exactly what they are! But wait! I'm just about to shatter the sweaty egos of some of them because actually the Hip Priests are a bunch of terribly nice chaps as well. Yep, you heard it. I was going to go down a different road with this and pretend that I didn't know them, like I would if they stopped me in the street, but then I thought, “Bollocks to that! Let's tell it like it is.” At this point I would like to add that I did ask the permission of our Editor to write and introduce you to the Hip Priests. He said "Why not?" so here we are! Their Facebook page aptly introduces them as Nathan Von Cruz (yelling, moaning), Lee Love (squealing, filthy bottom end), Austin Rocket (groaning, licking, furious fingering )and Skintight Tim – (barking, boozing, beating, banging). They profess to be the inbred, oversexed, white trash bastard sons of Iggy P, Johnny T, Lemmy and Handsome Dick whilst their longer description of themselves is “full-tilt bullshit.” Are we getting the picture? Ladies and Gentlemen, hot girls and pretty boys…let me introduce you to the biggest dicks in rock 'n' roll…the sonic reproducers…the Hip Priests. I have known these lovely fellas for a good while, and i have to admit that they are one of only a few bands that do a particular thing to me. Sounds a bit seedy, doesn't it? But its all gravy, because they have that wonderful power of making me at certain times of the year go back and beg for more of their garage-punk type yellings. Seriously, they are actually, that good! Every now and then we all have to delve into something a little dark or out of kilter with our everyday lives, and I am afraid these delinquents are my degenerating fix. Their new album ‘Black Denim Blitz’ is housed in a nice gatefold type CD cover that when you open it you're greeted with a shot of a girl’s behind, surprisingly wearing nothing but a black denim Hip Priests’ jacket. It also houses all their shocking lyrics too. Bonus! This third full album is a carry on from the first two with all its foul bad language and references to lust and bitches and evil, but this one sees a different angle on that with Love's welcome meanderings on the guitar and the inclusion of female vocals from Chez. ‘Treat Me Like Dirt’ is the prime example of this, about which Skintight Tim has admitted, "It's a complete departure for us." There are slower parts here also as well as the 100mph thrash of earlier sounds, but there are smatterings of this, let's say, new direction throughout ‘Black Denim Blitz’ really. Other highlights on this thirteen track slab of naughtiness are ‘Vodkacoma Casanova’ which reminds me of my all-time Hip fave, ‘Sonic Reproducer. Further into the mayhem, ‘2 Motherfucker Superior’, ‘Good Things Come to Those Who Hate' and ‘Jesus Died so We Could Ride’ are fine examples on an album that will be seen to be a shining star in the murky world that the the Hip Priests inhabit and rise above as kings of the night. Marvellous!
