intro
Clumsy and unfocused but also ambitious second album from oddball Italian popsters, Universal Sex Arena
This ambitious second album from 60’s-influenced Italian fun popsters Universal Sex Arena should leave you feeling rest assured. They are still rather wild, yet not life threatening. The self-appointed idiosyncrasies of Universal Sex Arena’s linguistics come in Italinglish, which is pleasant on the ear but a language which is difficult to understand. Sing-song rock-outs such as 'Sudden Donna' add to this cross-cultural dilemma. When this is finally resolved, 'Romancitysm' takes a turn towards seemingly endless spaghetti sonics. It loses focus - noodles sliding down from the kitchen wall - until, and just in time, a snappy synthesizer funk sound is introduced on 'Eyes Telling the Future'. The album's penultimate track 'The Ghost Town' is in a similar vein. You'll hear a clumsy yet daring mish-mash of freeform à la Italiano. 'Romancitysm' is far too odd to dismiss.
