intro
Imaginative debut album from the Use, the moniker of New Jersey-based eelctronic musician Michael Durek
A wide range of sometimes self-designed electronic instruments and assorted sounds make this an enjoyable and fun debut album from Michael Durek who when he was young played Bach and Chopin on the piano. He deconstructs the beats which initially he lets roll fluently. Odd funky electro beats work particularly well on 'Time Burton'. A couple of unpolished beauties show a darker side, like a robot's spleen. The digital ànd analog itches always remain within a coherent structure that could even make you dance to a few tracks. As you wile away time on the lovely 'Ripe', you know that there is a use for this album. Get it. It is one of the finest debuts this year. His sense of composition wins against the production which lacks a degree of subtlety but that's what CDs do. Hopefully it will appear on LP one day.
