intro
Fabulous collection of sea shanties and traditional numbers on debut album from North West folk act, Run Out The Guns
Too experienced and too exquisite to be called a pub act, Run Out The Guns excel in folk music harmonies and have built their album on the merits of a few traditionals. 'Bonny Ship the Diamond' shows off the origin of the licks which shot the Doobie Brothers to stardom; mere funky repetitive chords do the job there. Strictly traditional next are the medley of jigs, 'O’Brien the Piper'/'The Rat Catcher'/'The Sunny Day', which follow it, and which will beget tap dancing once audiences have bought a couple of brews off the saloon bar. The twang here becomes a little more vigorous. Although recorded in Warrington, the album seems to explore Britain's entire coast by song. While not exactly a substitute for the Navy, Run Out The Guns still make their tradition proud. Well into their merry oily years, these pub tigers show that they know their stuff.
