Barb Wire Dolls - Photoscapes

intro

Melanie Smith takes photographs of Greek punk act Barb Wire Dolls at Sound Control in Manchester

Barb Wire Dolls were formed in Greece in 2010. The band consists of Isis Queen (vocals), guitarist Pyn Doll, Jay Jay Doll (bass) and drummer Krash Doll. They have to be one of the hardest touring punk bands on the circuit. This is a snippet of what I had to say in ‘Destination Punk’, a new photo book by fellow photography friend Svenja Block who has been recording their live shows for a number of years in Berlin & London. You can buy the book here: http://countdownbooks.com/dir/?page_id=631. “Barb Wire Dolls came crashing into my life in the summer of 2011, when Teddie Dahlin first did a very revealing interview for my online magazine. I actually think it might have been one of their first for a UK publication. From that moment on I knew I had to go and witness one of their explosive shows, and photograph them. Their female singer blonde bombshell Isis Queen possesses that rare quality of being photogenic from every imaginable angle. The only other person I can think of who had this was Debbie Harry.“ I finally got to see/photograph them live at Rebellion Festival for the first time in 2013. Now back in the UK, this explosive punk band stopped off in Manchester, for their penultimate performance in a packed out intimate venue and gave us a stunning, electrifying performance. It is obvious that the extensive touring has paid off for the band as they were in fine form. You might say they were on fire. New songs littered their set and a new addition to the line up - female bassist Jay Jay. All eyes were firmly focused on front woman Isis Queen. It is hard not to be with her hair thrashing, whirling dervish, and sheer sensual performance. The audience who are always an important part of the band's set went wild and there was much jostling and dancing around. It’ll be a while before they make a return to the UK again as they plan to work on their second album, which will be produced by Steve Albini. I think we can safely say that the Barb Wire Dolls are conquering the UK punk market. Photos by Melanie Smith www.mudkissphotography.co.uk
