intro

Atmospheric but imitative post rock on debut album from Swiss group, Black Fluo

From Chiasso, near Como in the Italian speaking part 'dans La Suisse', comes this quartet who caught me on the backfoot. I initially thought they sounded rather Belgian; until I grabbed the press kit. Black Fluo deal in atmospheric sounds, accompanied by lyrics in English which don't always make great sense. 'Billion Sands' is an album of tranquil landscape new wave muzak which uses the English language as an escape route to enter the world of pop music. The randomly chosen monologues with words grabbed from whatever American channel, melting with stoned chords, sound like a very poor Sonic Youth imitation. The tedium on 'Billion Sands' though is not astounding. A certain grace strives to shine through; 'Les Vagues Caleidoscopiques' - kaleidoscope waves – is a rather exciting track. Ultimately though, one wishes that Black Fluo would forget about their heroes and influences. Black Fluo may be up to something good, as soon as they switch off American and British TV-channels. The English language apparently signifies to them some sense of mystique, but messes us whatever was left to comprehend about them. Drizzly atmospherics, drivelling melodies, rhymes and words. Pulver and ash.
