intro

Unfocused agitpop on debut album from Swiss-based electronic musician, Camilla Sparksss

Boy, does Camilla Sparksss act wild, though only in a way a spoilt child really could. At times, Camilla Sparksss' anger is so much over the top and undirected that it becomes fascinating. One listens in astonishment to her amazing music, which accompanies her oddly misguided words, and feels a dazzling disorientation. Thank heavens for her own little computer band. Like a wild explosion, Camilla Sparksss is the antidote to Sparks. There is no sophistication at all. She, however, shares much of their easy melodic wit, plus a love of hammering keyboard tunes. Her electro agitpop is an angry stab at pretty much anything, with no apparent reason. "That's why I'm rich," she shouts on ‘Precious People’, which thus perhaps explains the pun. Shouting and shrieking as a trademark might have got you somewhere back in 1976. In 2014 though we need much brighter minds to act and to challenge the forces at large. The rebellion shown on this album deserves a much more outspoken voice, and is far away from that of Poly Styrene or Siouxsie. Perhaps I'm too harsh on her, spoilt little brat that she seems to me. I found little controversy on this album to justify her anger. She, for example, repeatedly shouts "Asshole" and not "Glasshole". Even at a young age, she already seems out of touch with the world of today. But blimey, her computer band should be backing, say, someone like Jello Biafra. Both of them in one outfit would be both riveting and cause genuine upset. The title track works like a fabulously ripping showcase of electropunk trash. If you are able to switch off the inane words after that from the next track 'You Are Awesome' to the final song 'White Cat', this really becomes pretty gripping. The bastard daughter of the two brothers in Sparks indeed.
