Melanie Smith takes photographs of rising psychedelic pop/rock act Temples at the Academy II in Manchester
Hailed as one of Britain's best new bands, Temples landed in Manchester on the 1st March to perform at a sold out Academy II with support from London quintet Childhood and Aussie expats Dark Bells. As soon I clapped eyes on James Bagshaw, I was struck by a comparison to Marc Bolan, with a touch of glitter to his pretty boy face. Their music is modern day pop with psychedelic rock overtones, but all the bands this evening pulled out all the stops and proved to be impressive, a truly inspiring evening all round. Temples are a four piece band. Formed in 2012 and hailing from Kettering, Northamptonshire, the band members are James Bagshaw (vocals and guitar), Tom Warmsley (bass and backing vocals), Sam Toms (drums) and Adam Smith (keyboards). They released their debut album 'Sun Structures' in February, amassing glowing reviews, and shooting straight into the UK charts at No 7, plus No.2 in the Indie Album chart. The album was self-produced by Bagshaw and mixed by Claudius Mittendorfer. Temples are fast gathering support and encouragement from the likes of Manchester legends Noel Gallagher and Johnny Marr, and gaining a lot of media attention from supporting bands like Primal Scream, Suede, Kasabian, Mystery Jets, Interpol, the Vaccines and the Rolling Stones in Hyde Park last year. In addition they played at a number of music festivals last year.
Also at Academy 2, Manchester
