intro
Fabulous third album from increasingly acclaimed Derby-based band the Sons, whose music incorporates an indie rock sound with components of rhythm and blues, folk and country
The Sons are a British indie rock band with a difference. Their music incorporates sounds from various other genres including rhythm and blues, folk and country, and has a heavy emphasis on its musical composition and lyrical content. These guys are musicians’ musicians. And they play music too. Good music! They hail from deepest, darkest Derby, but don’t hold that against them. They aren’t exactly a new band either. They have already released two studio albums in Europe, and their music actually first became available in the United States in July 2011. They have been coined as “The UK’s Best Kept Secret” but the industry buzz around them has been increasing steadily over the last year ‘Heading into Land’, their third offering, was recorded at The Snug in Derby between January and October 2013, The band themselves formed in 2002 and consists of Paul Herron, Stewart English, Lee Blades, Roger Millichamp and Steven Herron. They have just been added to rotation on Pandora, played to an industry VIP Showcase crowd at London's Dublin Castle in April and headlined the German music festivals - ManiFEST and Alstadtfest – in August. They were LA-based TAXI Music’s ‘Featured Artist’ in September and undertook a world tour in November - playing intimate, acoustic shows in the US and full band shows in Europe. Most of the album has been penned by the talented Paul Herron with assistance from Steven and Stewart. ‘Heading into Land’ is an album of tales about everyday life, focusing on the paths we all take whether they be good or bad and the choices we make to get there. Highlights on it are the Crowded House-ish ‘Crowd Went Wild’ and the foot tapping ‘I’m Not Happy’. ‘Relic’ is a piano driven beauty which recalls early Secret Affair. ‘Death Love Money’ has been chosen as their first single release and ‘Flash and Bang’ is a suped-up beer-in-arm rocker. There is a lavish inner booklet accompanying this fine effort which shows various stages of merriment in Bar One, Derby, and includes extensive lyrics and acknowledgements plus photos by Ben Gadsby and Toby Batchelor among others. All in all it looks like it should be a good journey into 2014 judging by this album, and it seems that the Sons will be ‘Heading into Land’ for a long time yet.
