intro
Confident and upbeat-sounding guitar pop with a dark undercurrent on impressive debut album from Dunedin-based indie guitar trio, Trick Mammoth
There is a feast of good material coming out of New Zealand at the moment. No sooner had I come down from the extraordinary I Am Giant and the brilliance of Die! Die! Die! than I am subjected to another slice of wonder in the shape of Dunedin trio Trick Mammoth’s debut album ‘Floristry’. Band founder Adrian Ng has been joined by Millie Lovelock (Astro Children) and Sam Valentine (Males), and in doing so has created a confident debut release of happy-go-lucky guitar-pop perfect for the summery times ahead. That’s if we get any this year! Ng has a Elliott Smith-influenced solo career, but a quick listen will confirm to you that Trick Listen are a world apart from that sound. The inclusion of the other two members of the group has given Trick Mammoth a huge sound . The addition of Millie Lovelock adds not only some surreal vocals but she is easy too on guitar and bass. Sam Valentine is the beat boy on drums and also doubles up on bass, while Ng himself plays guitars and bass and also sings, making this a trio of some force. All the tracks on the album are also written by Ng while the photos that appear on the inner sleeve and which shows the band in unusual positions are taken by Lovelock and Valentine, all of which indicates what a tight knit trio they are. And, so to the music. Recorded, mixed and mastered by Tex Houston at Fishrider Records HQ in Dunedin, 'Floristry' is an excellentfirst outing. Reported "to be fragile, lucid and rough around the edges", the tracks on here draw their themes from film, literature and poetry which sounds quite innocent, doesn't it? The whole offering however is deeply dark and focuses a lot on death, although there are elements of sugar sweetness in places which are thrown in to keep the listener pleasingly off the scent a little.
