intro

Understated mix of house music, minimalism and pop music on debut album from Spazzkid, the moniker for Los Angeles-based producer and musician Mark Redito

Disorientatingly non-nippon-tronic, Mark Redito a.k.a. Spazzkid, sets the tone for a ride through tingling electronica music. At times bubbling up unsuspectedly, but always with a gentle hand, 'Desire' encapsulates a set of songs, which are most unlikely to cause alarm but that remain totally fascinating. Merging micro house music, figurative minimalism and pop music on 'Desire', Spazzkid fills the gap left between John Cage and the Pet Shop Boys. There is mesmerizing elegance on 'Marquez', the second last track off 'Desire'. Popping and prancing as it moves along, it eventually shapes a rhythm. 'Marquez' concludes the epilogue to 'Desire', which throughout provides a tingle to one's ear. By humble means, Spazzkid has crafted this gentle set of neo-escapism. Wishy-washy on first hearing, you're prone to discover hidden depths next. Enjoy the Hawaiian shirt twang of 'Kokeshi Doll' or the savvy sway of 'Loving Free'. 'Desire' is an album that upholds its own sense of unintentional quirkiness.
