intro
Fine lo-fi garage rock on debut album from the Machismo's, the side project of former Jacob's Mouse drummer Sam Marsh, which, while recorded in 1996, has only been mastered and released now
The Machismo's Sam Marsh, who lives in Peel Acres, East Anglia as it happens, was the drummer in Jacob's Mouse, and 'Good Things About to Happen' has the drive you would expect from a drummer. It features lo-fi garage indie rock first and thoughtful slower songs next, both pf which still sound vibrant seventeen years after they were recorded. A one-man band not shy of a sidestep into subdued dub music, The Machismo's is, or was, a name chosen with irony. Testing negative on testerone, the album is a lush affair, bearing in mind the limitations in recording back in 1996. This 1996 gently ramshackling album sounds amazingly solid now. The songs were mastered in 2011 by the way. And what a great job was done there. Depth as well as a sense of elevation appear on what once were crummy cassette tapes. More importantly, the album includes many great songs, even though 'Good Things About to Happen' has modesty stamped all over it. 'Jilt' is a beauty of a song that would not fall out of place on an unplugged Nirvana-set. 'New Start' and 'Rogue Males' feature more very early examples of the riffs that we now take for granted. These tracks simply are too good to be left on the shelves. Extra points should be given too for not mentioning John Peel in the press release. He would have, however, loved this album and played quite a few tracks off it.
